In ancient times, people believed in the interrelation of certain constellations, (the zodiac signs), to man and gemstones. The Greeks assigned different stones for each of the zodiac signs, based on the powers of the stone, its color and its relationship to the sign. Today people associate gemstones with the months of the year rather than the signs of the zodiac. Birthstones are considered to bring good fortune if they are worn by someone with a birthday in a particular month. In 1952, the National association of Jewelers compiled the following list of birthstones adopted by major jewelry industry associations in America:
